Athlete, Pay Attention to the Legends

Pay Attention to the Legends

4  “For whatever was written in earlier times was written for our instruction, so that through perseverance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.”

Romans 15:4 (NASB)

Legends in the world of sports persisted and prevailed. They knew success and failure.

They stood out among their peers. They left a mark in the sports world. Athletes following in their steps will give anything for a few hours with them.

It is a common occurrence today to hear a young athlete talk about the privilege he or she had to pick the brains of a sports legend. Most NFL running backs will consume everything Jim Brown has to say.

Every newcomer on the PGA Tour maneuvers for a practice round with Jack Nicklaus. Even accomplished Ryder Cup golf pros have taken NBA legend Michael Jordan to their international matches for inspiration.

Romans 15:4 refers to the Old Testament of the Bible. Much of it is the unfolding of history in which God was working in and through the lives of real individuals. Too many people dismiss the Old Testament as stuffy and ancient, old news and out of touch. Not so.

These Bible legends may not have played sports, but they walked through circumstances that held the same challenges you face today in the sports world. Struggle, faith, fear, perseverance, loss, disappointment … accounts that make legends in life.

God preserved a record of the lives of men and women in history for our benefit. They represent lives of a different era, often a more difficult time.

They bear witness to what God has said is right or wrong, wise or foolish, cautious or reckless. In them we observe the consequences of their decisions and choices.

Even better, these recorded lives teach us more about God Himself — His grace, His forgiveness, His power and His love. What we learn about God from these men and women leaves us with hope for our own lives.

Stay tuned … these life-legends offer ageless lessons for all of us.
