40 “A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone when he is fully trained will be like his teacher.”
Luke 6:40 (ESV)
It’s hard to believe our team has already started OTAs (Organized Team Activities). What are OTAs? They’re the first training ground of the NFL off-season. Prospective players, returning players and new coaches can attend OTAs. Here the foundation is laid for defensive schemes, offensive schemes and getting acclimated to the new coaching staff. Players are literally being discipled by the coaching staff.
In this Scripture passage Jesus gives a powerful revelation on discipleship: “a disciple is not above his teacher ... ” He is trying to get across to His team that He is the example that they are to mimic, and that humility is the way to authentic discipleship.
Sometimes players come into the NFL with a know-it-all attitude, thinking that they are above everyone else. It is very unwise, even foolish to think you know more than your coach. A wise player would desire to be like their coaches, not attempt to be above them.
Athlete, it’s the same with us as disciples of Christ. Our aim in life is not to be above Jesus, but to posture ourselves to be like Him. We take on His likeness by training according to His standards. He is the greatest coach of all time. His methods are timeless and priceless. All we have to do is follow Him and His training, which prepares us for life.
