1,2 “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off every encumbrance and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with endurance the race set out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus …”
Hebrews 12:1,2 (Berean Study Bible)
As Christians, we are instructed in Scripture to train ourselves in faith. Hebrews 12:1 tells us to “run with endurance the race set out for us.”
We are compelled to train ourselves in faith, much like a runner trains for a race.
To train for a race: I throw off clothing that hinders my movement. To train myself in faith: I throw off sin that hinders my heart. Christian, we must repent quickly when convicted of sin.
To train for a race: I run within the boundary lines marked out. To train myself in faith: I run within the boundary lines marked out through God’s Word. Christian, we must hide God’s Word in our hearts daily.
To train for a race: I listen to my coach, run my race, and keep my eyes on the finish line. To train myself in faith: I listen to my coach -- Jesus, run for Him, and keep my eyes on Him. Christian, we must follow the example of Jesus, and listen to His voice.
To train for a race: I build up endurance through daily physically straining my body. To train myself in faith: I build up endurance through daily spiritually straining my faith. Christian, we must endure hardship as discipline and trust God to sustain us.
We are faith-athletes in training!
