4 “Those who had been scattered preached the word wherever they went.”
Acts 8:4 (NIV)
The NCAA Basketball Tournament shuffles basketball teams all over the place. I’m on the move a lot. Are you?
The pace at which we play life demands it. Planes, trains and automobiles move us along incessantly. But so do other things. There are other precipitating factors.
God’s people in Acts 8 were scrambling for their lives, experiencing a vicious full court press. No fouls were being called. Persecution, intolerance, power ‘n politics, and social oppression forced its hand, and they went on the run.
But here’s what God wanted them to see in the midst of all their scattering … and here is what He wants us to see amidst the moves we make:
GOD MOVES PEOPLE. God is involved in the tough life events that end up moving us away from where we want to be. He often is behind our “scattering.”
As much as we’d like to think we make moves independently, we know we don’t move as freely on our own as we think. People and circumstances don’t do all the work either. The invisible hand of God moves people.
So look for His hand at work. He sees. He knows. He cares. He moves.
FIND MOMENTS IN THE MOVEMENT. God may want to connect more dots than just A to B in any move we make. He oft surprises us with unexpected connections and multiple purposes.
So often God has more purpose for us in the moves we make than we think. He sees more and wants us to behold more with Him (Check out 1 Corinthians 2:9,10!).
PREACH THE WORD. Rep it. Mention it. Quote it. Make it known. Don’t leave truth and grace just to the self-discovery of others.
Point the way. Declare the praises of Him who calls us out of darkness and into His marvelous light (1 Peter 2:9,10). Let’s move people down the path of truth and grace with us. Let’s be the messenger we’ve been called to be.
WHEREVER MEANS WHEREVER. The only restricted area where we should not preach a good, life-giving word should be wherever we don’t go.
That means there are green lights everywhere to be found … media rooms and locker rooms, arenas and practice facilities, bedrooms and malls, planes, trains and automobiles … and even libraries, as long as we’re quiet.
Everywhere is a place to declare His praises, His worth.
Reflect: Where is the place you must stop limiting your gospel messaging? Who needs an encouraging, life-giving, direction-pointing word today?
Share a story with a friend of how God moved you more than you thought, of how He connected the dots surprisingly for you (You’ll both be blessed!).
A prayer to consider: LORD Jesus, keep connecting the dots for me and through me. Move me as you wish. May I move in confidence with You and for You no matter where life takes me.
May I hear You say often of me, “Way to go!” -- for Your glory and my joy in You. Amen.
