Athlete, Invest in Your Temple

Invest in Your Temple

19  “Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own?”

1 Corinthians 6:19 (New American Standard Bible)

The body is a temple, and LeBron James takes the utmost care of his. According to an article on businessinsider.com, James spends an estimated $1.5 million per year on his body.

This figure includes paying for a former Navy SEAL serving as his biochemist, a recovery coach, chefs and masseuses. He also has a full gym, ice tub, and hot tub in his home. This is because as of now, his body belongs to basketball.

He has invested in his body to make the most of basketball’s investment in him. Basketball is closely connected to his purpose here on Earth, so he must take care of what makes his playing basketball possible: his body.

As an athlete, you may not take care of your body to the extent that James takes care of his, but you are called to take care of your body because of your dedication to your sport.

How much more should we take care of our temples knowing that we belong to God! Our ultimate purpose is to glorify God.

In 1 Corinthians 6:19, it tells us that we are not our own. Our body is the temple of the Holy Spirit.

Christ made the ultimate investment in us when He gave His life for ours. Therefore, we must invest in our temples as well.

How do we invest in our temples? Be mindful of what we eat, watch, listen to and do because the Holy Spirit has taken permanent residence in us. Whatever we take into our temples should glorify God.

The devotion and care that one of the greatest basketball players dedicates to his body should pale in comparison to the devotion and care we dedicate to giving our bodies over to God as living sacrifices daily.

LeBron James’ investment in his purpose will pay off down the line just as ours will when we see Christ face to face.
