16 “Better a little with the fear of the Lord than great wealth with turmoil.”
Proverbs 15:16 (NIV)
The tipping point in the 2015 NCAA D1 men’s basketball championship game came on the shoulders of a team’s eighth man, Grayson Allen. Duke University would not have won the title without the crucial contribution of this young freshman role player. Two Blue Devil stars sat long periods on the bench while this understated freshman shined under the spotlight, rallying his team to victory.
Today’s Scripture highlights a crucial tipping point too: the fear of the LORD. What gets you over the top for life is not wealth (and all the power, control, comfort and approval that seems to come with it). Rather, it’s a proper fear of God. Regard and mindfulness of Him, attentiveness, obedience and devotion to Him is what makes the difference.
Athlete, put wealth (and all his friends) on the bench if it brings turmoil. What counts is a proper fear of God. Give that some playing time and let him run with abandon. That substitution brings championship living.
Prayer to consider today: O Father, help us to see and trust that “little with the fear of the LORD” plays out way better in the end. Don’t let us trust in our “starters” (our drive for wealth and accompanying power, control, comfort and approval) alone. It’s properly regarding and serving You that makes the difference. Satisfy us and shape us like Your Son, the greatest substitute.
